The NBMA is the largest and oldest, national, not-for-profit organization that supports Black American distance runners. The organization has awarded more than $10,000 in scholarships to college-bound, high school senoirs.
In 2016 we had the pleasure of meeting Tony Reed co-founder of the NBMA and Alex Williams, Communications Director for the NBMA. We had no idea of what they were doing in the black running committee but we learned real quick. NBMA is literally changing the look of marathoners in Dallas and across the country. When they asked us to cover their annual summit we jumped at the chance to work with this historic organization.
In 2017 their summit was in Saint Louis, Mo on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River. The local chapter of Black Girls run hosted black runners from across the country and they showed up and showed out. It was a great to spend time getting to know everyone that came to run in the GoSTL weekend events. That wasn’t it though, we got the pleasure to interview running greats such as Dick & Ron Gregory and in their hometown. This project felt more like a vacation than a job. Seeing all those runners from across the country coming together and learning what they are doing in their own communities to support to cause was phenomenal.
We’re proud to say we got to experience such an event and well be with NBMA for their 2018 annual summit in Baltimore, MD and in 2019 in Boston, MA. All we can say is stay tuned for more from this group!
